The Hudson-Fulton Celebration
New York's Biggest Party Ever!

In 2009, New York State celebrates the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial, marking the 400th anniversary of the voyages of Henry Hudson and Samuel de Champlain in 1609 as well as the 200th anniversary of Robert Fulton’s steamship trip in 1807.  Many of the public events planned by municipalities, museums, and cultural and environmental organizations during this banner year are directly inspired by a history and water carnival New Yorkers mounted one hundred years ago.

The 1909 Hudson-Fulton Celebration is the subject of a fascinating and handsomely illustrated book and lectures by Kathleen Eagen Johnson.
Kate brings her passion for history, insight, and sense of humor to
The Hudson-Fulton Celebration: New York’s River Festival
of 1909 and the Making of a Metropolis
. She is eager to engage
history enthusiasts, educators, environmentalists, antiques collectors, urbanists, and others in a conversation about how this large-scale festival, and the snapshot it offers of New Yorkers’ attitudes and concerns in 1909, can inform our lives today.
